Event Description New Documentary on Arkansas “Genius” composer Frank Zappa once said “The stuff is fantastic... you've got to hear it!” about the music of Arkansas born composer Conlon Nancarrow. The highly regarded European composer Gyorgy Ligeti also declared “For me it's the best music of any composer living today.” Nancarrow was also awarded one of the first MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grants for his astonishing music in 1982. Despite these accolades Nancarrow is little known here in the United States. Dr. James Greeson of the UA Department of Music has tried to correct this situation by producing a documentary film on Nancarrow's amazing life and music. Completed in April 2012, Greeson's film, “Conlon Nancarrow: Virtuoso of the Player Piano” was premiered at a “Nancarrow Weekend” conference at the Southbank Centre in London; and was presented in San Francisco at a “Nancarrow at 100” festival in early November. The film was nominated for a regional Emmy award and was broadcast by AETN last September. It is being shown throughout Mexico and Latin America on “Canal 22” the Mexican equivalent to our PBS network. Northwest Arkansas residents are invited to attend a free live screening of this new one-hour documentary at the Fayetteville Public Library on Monday, November 19 at 6:15pm in the Walker Room. Greeson will be there to answer questions along with Dale Carpenter, Chair of the UA Journalism Dept., who served as the Associate Producer of the documentary as well as Robert Ginsburg who narrated the film, and others involved in its production. Support for the film was provided by grants from the Arkansas Humanities Council, the Arkansas Department of Heritage, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, as well as the University of Arkansas. The screening will commence at 6:15 pm in the Walker Meeting Room of the Fayetteville Public Library on Monday, November 19. There is no admission charge and the screening is open to the public. |
