Event Description BENEATH ICE By Matt Covington Department of Geosciences Tues, Feb 5, 7:00 pm Giffels Auditorium in Old Main Photos and stories from his recent scientific expedition to Svalbard, a remote archipelago in the Arctic off the northeast coast of Greenland. He was part of a three-man team that was exploring and mapping caves formed inside glaciers. The team constructed a 3D model of one cave system in order to better understand how the caves form and the role they play in channeling summer melt water beneath the glacier. Such caves are one of the largest unknown factors in predicting the fate of the Greenland Ice Sheet and other glaciers in a warming climate. |
