Event Description:

If Georgia O’Keeffe is the most famous American artist of the first half of the twentieth century, then her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, is easily the most influential.

As a photographer, magazine editor, and owner of several successive art galleries in New York, he promoted American artists who had freed themselves from nineteenth-century academic conventions and who expressed what was often called the “spirit” of 291, as his first gallery was called.

Explore the art of major figures in the Stieglitz Circle — O’Keeffe, Arthur Dove, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Paul Strand, and Stieglitz himself — before seeing the much anticipated exhibition of their work opening at Crystal Bridges in November.

The three-session course will include ample opportunity for discussion.
