The Tournées Festival: New French Films on Campus
Start Date: 11/8/2013Start Time: 7:45 PM
End Date: 11/9/2013End Time: 7:45 PM

Event Description:
The Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and the French Cinema Club proudly present BERLIN 1885: LA RUÉE SUR L’AFRIQUE (BERLIN 1885: THE DIVISION OF AFRICA). Exposing one of the most ignominious —and little studied—events of the past 130 years, Joël Calmettes’s exemplary documentary chronicles the Berlin Conference on Africa. At this meeting, held at Chancellor Otto von Bismarck’s official residence in Berlin, the major European countries and the U.S. divided up the vast continent for their own personal gain without the presence of a single African; proceedings which set in motion the ruinous colonization of Africa that would irrevocably and disastrously change the fate of that land.

The Tournées Festival was made possible with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S. and the Centre National de la Cinématographie et de l’Image Animée. We are thankful to our other sponsors: Florence Gould Foundation, Campus France USA, highbrow entertainment.
