Event Description

PAINKILLERS- Asif’s Guns

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—University Programs will host the exhibit PAINKILLERS, by Asif Farooq from March 17 to April 18, 2014 in the Anne Kittrell Art Gallery at the University of Arkansas Union. The exhibit is open Monday thru Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be a lecture on Wednesday, March 19th at 4:30 p.m. in the Union Theater and a reception following at 5:30 p.m. in the Gallery.

This event is free to current University of Arkansas Fayetteville students who pay the student activities fee. Students must show ID for entrance. Admission for general public and non-fee-paying students is contingent upon seating availability and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis after fee-paying students are admitted. For special accommodations due to disability, please contact the Office of Student Activities, osa@uark.edu, or call 479-575-5255.

The exhibit is a comprehensive installation of more than 50 firearms handcrafted from cardboard. Miami-born artist, Asif Farooq, is meticulously accurate in his replication of the size, shape, and distinctive components of each gun model. His only supplies include cardboard boxes, an x-acto knife and glue. “Asif Farooq exceeds the Webster’s definition of artist,” says founder and curator of Primary Projects, BooksIII Bischof. The New York Times also commended Farooq’s pop-up store of cardboard replica firearms in their article “Breathing Life, and Art, Into a Downtrodden Neighborhood”. Through his art, Asif Farooq continues to make a difference. In the gritty community of Wynwod, outside of Miami, artists, such as Asif, have helped propel the neighborhood into a must-see spot for visitors and locals alike. Local Miami graffiti artist, Ski, says, “It’s unbelievable, the transition from desolate streets to completely filled energy where everybody is happy”. Asif has also helped raise money for an organization called “Stop Handgun Violence”. The organization works to prevent handgun violence through public awareness and legislation without banning guns. Come see the painstakingly meticulous guns; everything from snub-nosed revolvers to M16 assault rifles. PAINKILLERS is the exhibit you don’t want to miss.
