Negotiating Salaries: Due Diligence Rules of Engagement for Stakeholders
Presented by University of Arkansas Global Campus and Sam M. Walton College of Business

As the economy improves, expectations for higher salaries are on the rise. Incumbent workers are hoping for higher raises than have been the recent norm, and new recruits are setting their sights on the best offers they can get. What is a human resource professional, recruiter or business leader to do? What can employees and new hires expect?  

This class will explore these questions and offer strategic tips for employers and savvy tactics for employees and job seekers. It is all about negotiation. It is about who has the power and how whatever the outcome, there is alignment between employee aspirations and organizational imperatives. Getting to such a win-win takes skills in preparation, communication, and follow-through – on both sides of the desk! 

As a result of this class, business professionals will be better able to:
•         Align current salary trends with their own organizations’ resources and goals
•         Create and manage organizational salary strategies
•         Follow the organization’s salary strategy with confidence and integrity

As a result of this class, incumbent workers and job seekers will be better able to:
•         Research salary trends in their industry
•         Present their skills and accomplishments to win the recognition needed in a salary negotiation discussion
•         Understand and accept the outcome of a salary negotiation discussion

Our instructor, Arthur T. Matthews J.D., is a Certified Mediator & Arbitrator (NRC, EEOC and AAA) and has been a visiting professor at the University of Arkansas Sam M. Walton College of Business since 1998. Matthews possesses a 25-year body of work in leadership, negotiations, employee/labor relations, human resources and diversity and inclusion. He serves as an assistant adjunct professor at New York University and as a consulting faculty member at Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. He teaches courses such as diversity, leadership, human resources, labor relations, employee relations, mediation, labor-management cooperation, arbitration, managing in a global economy and public speaking.
