Faculty Chamber Recital
Start Date: 9/10/2014Start Time: 7:30 PM
End Date: 9/10/2014End Time: 9:00 PM

Event Description
Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Fine Arts Center, 7:30 p.m.
The faculty chamber players include Er-Gene Kahng - violin, Nophachai Cholthitchanta - clarinet, Lia Uribe - bassoon, Richard Rulli - trumpet, Cory Mixdorf - trombone, Garrett Jones - contrabass, and Chalon Ragsdale - percussion.
The faculty will be performing works from Igor Starvinsky's L'Historie du Soldat and James Stephenson's The Devil's Tale. L'Histoire du Soldat, translated as "The Soldier's Tale", is based on a Russian Folk Tale. The libretto relates the parable of a solider who trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited economic gain. The Devil's Tale is a modern day imagining of what happens after the Stravinsky piece ends.
In Stephenson's composition, Stravinsky's Devil, re-named "Joe," awakes to discover that Stravinsky's folk tale was all a dream! And, he and his girlfriend "Hannah" live in Las Vegas! The story that follows is incredible. The University of Arkansas Department of Music and Professor Richard Rulli are Consortium Commissioners for this new composition by the Chicago based composer, James Stephenson.
During both compositions, performing the roles of the characters will be music department faculty Chris Knighten, narrator; Stephen Caldwell, soldier; Tim Thompson, devil; and Lisa Margulis, Hannah.
