Event Description:
The Arkansas Archeological Society presents guest speaker Dr. Daniel LaDu, Assistant Professor, University of Southern Mississippi. His talk, “Coles Creek Hamlets and Villages: Reconstructing the Complete Late Woodland Settlement System in the Lower Mississippi Valley” will be on Wednesday, January 13 at 7pm via Zoom.

Zoom meeting link: Passcode: ACW7?vxF

Full Abstract:
Coles Creek societies are presumed to have operated within a three-tiered settlement system between AD 750 and 1200. A century of excavation within the Lower Mississippi Valley has taught us a great deal about the social, political, and ceremonial importance of these distinctive mound-and-plaza centers; but this focus has come at the expense of our familiarity with Coles Creek villages and hamlets. Drawing from a sample of ten non-mound sites, Dr. LaDu presents a preliminary synthesis of the complete Late Woodland settlement system, considering the utility of the current site typology, site layout, and environmental location and concludes with a series of research questions intended to highlight current limitations and inform future research.
