Event Description:
The Beta Pi chapter of Eta Sigma Phi Classical Studies Honor Society invites all university students to attend a lecture by Dr. Jeremy Hartnett on Thursday, January 30, 2020, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Gearhart 026. The lecture will cover five stories about Pompeii at its base citizen level, discussing the common lives of Romans that are often overlooked in favor of temples and emperors. There will be a more focused and in-depth follow-up lunch seminar on Friday, January 31 from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in AFLS D113. The lunch seminar will discuss the excavation of an ancient funerary monument under a seventeenth-century basilica, the life and context of the man buried in that tomb, and how this funerary monument has made its way across the Atlantic Ocean, from Rome to New York.

Dr. Hartnett is a professor of Classics, as well as the Andrew T. and Anne Ford Chair in the Liberal Arts at Wabash College in Indiana. He specializes in the social history and archaeology of Rome, and his research focuses on the daily life of ancient Romans in Pompeii, Rome, and Herculaneum.
