Event Description:
This course explores the origins and literary and social development of the Ten Commandments from Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 into modern Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant traditions. Because the lists themselves don’t explicitly number their commandments, divergent numbering systems exist today. Spencer Allen, a UA professor of biblical languages and early Christian history, will discuss each religious tradition, as well as the overall structure, justification, and organization, as we try to figure out “which are the Ten Commandments?”
