Event Description:
Card Night with Il Circolo Italiano on Oct 16th at 6PM

Il Circolo Italiano invites all University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, students to attend their annual Italian Card Night event on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, 6:00pm-7:30pm, in the JB Hunt World Language Center, JBHT room 215. Members of Il Circolo Italiano will teach participants how to play various Italian card games including Scopa and Briscola.

Bring your Student ID to check in and enjoy a delightful evening as you eat pizza, learn about a popular Italian pastime, and perhaps learn some Italian language!

Card games are found in every corner of the globe. They are universally used to pass the time and gather people together. Italian cards look very different from the ones used in American culture. They utilize four different suit cards: sword (spade), cups (coppe), coins (denari), and clubs (bastoni). Each region of Italy has its own variation based on its influences but two games are universal, Scopa and Briscola, the national card games of Italy. Scopa was widespread throughout Italy in the 18th century and is very popular in Italian colonies in Brazil, Libya, and Somalia. It is a favorite Italian pastime and it is very common to see people gathered around the Piazza to play. Briscola is arguably the second most popular card game in Italy. The Portuguese adapted this popular game and brought it back to their different colonies as well. If you want to learn more about the specific rules you can check out https://www.modianocards.com/learn-to-play-italian-scopa and https://www.pagat.com/aceten/briscola.html.
