Event Description:
Dr. Leland C. Bement of the Oklahoma Archeological Survey will present a lecture: "How to Kill a Bison: The development of bison hunting during Folsom times." Following the late Pleistocene extinction of mammoths and other large animals, early cultures on the Plains of North America adapted their hunting style to be successful against the remaining largest mammal, bison. This presentation will discuss how early North American hunters integrated knowledge of bison behavior, landscape evolution, and environmental change to develop a highly successful hunting adaptation. Key changes in hunting technology are considered as well as possible developments in social adaptations during the Folsom period. Aspects of this hunting adaptation were still employed by bison hunters some 10,000 years later.
Dr. Bement received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1991 from the University of Texas, Austin, and has been employed since then as an archaeologist with the Oklahoma Archeological Survey and as Research Faculty at the University of Oklahoma. He is a specialist on early paleoindian cultures of the Southern Great Plains, focusing on Clovis and Folsom hunters of the late Pleistocene. He also has performed considerable research into bison ecology and behavior and in environmental and climate changes at the close of the Pleistocene.
