Event Description:
Vietnamese Student Association invites UofA students to attend Tet holiday, the celebration of the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, on Saturday, March 16th at 5:00 pm at the Reynolds Center. Tet holiday marks the first day of the year in lunar calendar. This is the special time when Vietnamese families gather, reflect that they did in the old year and welcome the good coming year.
UofA Students can get their free tickets on Tuesday (February 26th), Wednesday (February 27th) and Thursday (February 28th) from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, in front of the Union (or inside the Union in the case of bad weather). There are 20 non-student tickets available for purchase at the price of $12.
Tet or Tet Nguyen Dan is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tet by cooking special holiday foods and cleaning their house. People consider what they do on the dawn of Tet will determine their fate for the whole year, hence people always smile and behave as nice as they can in the hope for a better year. The event is to introduce how Vietnamese celebrate Tet, which are calligraphy, foods and music.
Calligraphy giving is a special traditional custom in Vietnam which originated from the art of writing beautifully. The custom does not only reflect Vietnamese people’s respect to knowledge but helps preserve a time-honored activity as well.
Street food is the heart and soul to many of the Southeast Asian countries and Vietnam is certainly one of it. One of the most popular Vietnamese street foods is Cơm Tấm (broken rice). A plate of Com Tam comes with a wide range of protein on top, such as grilled pork chops, shredded pork skin, grill shrimp, vegetable egg roll and so on. It is usually garnished with pickled vegetable or sliced cucumber and tomato. A dipping sauce of fish sauce, lime and chili can be served.
Vietnamese Student Association aims to celebrate the Vietnamese customs to bring integrity to Vietnamese community on campus as well as introduce it to other students who are interested in such event.
This event is supported by the Student Activities Fee as a funded event by the Associated Student Government and is free to all currently-enrolled University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, students who pay the student activities fee.
