Event Description:
The University of Arkansas School of Art presents M.F.A. Thesis Exhibition Alexis Kurtzman: Subject to Change. The exhibition will take place March 30-April 27, 2018 in the Jim and Joyce Faulkner Performing Arts Center.

Subject to Change is compromised of a series of self-devised, ritually practiced, free associative action mark-making methodologies. Each procedure explores various degrees of chance operations and seeks to question and explore intuition, intention, interpretation and human participation. A hybrid of fixed method with a variable of the unknown explores and investigates performative mark making strategies, collaboration, control and working under pre-fixed intervals.

Alongside chance, temporally ritualized procedures are concurrently developed to achieve works on paper whose marks are not initially foreseen. These systems emphasize sequential passage of time and active attempts to be present in real time. This practice of working addresses the conflict of the disconnection of a maker engaged in active activity of doing versus the relative stagnancy of the resulting end product. The tension within the work exists between the physical end product and the formulas which created them. Repetitively practiced actions within the studio attempt to unite contextual boundaries of art production and ritually practiced everyday activity. Through printmaking, drawing, and reversible/irreversible mixed media, the work posses strong references to their materiality and the passage of time as seen through change, evolution, or degradation.
