Event Description:
After more than 50 years of service at the University of Arkansas, Mary Gail Reed will retire on Tuesday, June 30. A retirement celebration parade for Reed will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, in Lot 56B at the corner of S Razorback Rd and Leroy Pond Dr on the University of Arkansas campus.

Reed began working in the U of A Graduate School on April Fool’s Day in 1971 after graduating from Draughon’s School of Business in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Reed recalls that the Graduate School offices were at that time housed in the current day Administration Building.

Reed fondly remembers that "the dean at that time was Dean McDermott and he couldn’t remember my name, so he just called me ‘Kid’.”

After working in the Graduate School, Reed transferred to the registrar's office and worked under Carter Short. In August 1978, Reed transferred to the U of A Department of Electrical Engineering. “I worked for four different department heads: Jerry Yeargan, Neil Schmitt, Bryan Webb, and Bill Brown. When Dr. Brown stepped down, I worked for Neil Schmitt again until I left the university in 1998 to work ‘in the real world’ for a couple of years. Wow, was that an eye opener!” During her time away from the University Reed worked in hospitality management.

In January 2001, Reed returned to the University of Arkansas to serve as the fiscal support analyst for the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST) which has been her U of A home ever since. “Working for CAST has been very interesting, learning all the different ways that our people can interact with so many different areas of the campus, city, and world. I’ve really been lucky over the years at the U of A with my different jobs and all the people I have met along the way. It has been bittersweet to be leaving the University at this time with COVID-19 while I'm working at home and not on campus seeing my co-workers."

Director of CAST, Jackson Cothren has remarked that “Mary Gail is simply an outstanding employee: unquestionably dedicated to her job and a pleasure to work with. Her work ethic has made her a valued employee in every position she has held, the University of Arkansas will miss her.”

When preparing notes in celebration for Mary Gail’s 40 yrs of service to the University, the late Dr. Brown had said in one word, she is ‘amazing’, and I don't think anyone can disagree.

Mary Gail has spent the last 20 years working within the CAST research program where she has faced many demands and responsibilities. She has always insured that the needs of each faculty, staff, and student within the department receive individual attention whether it be budget questions, new hires, or a complete synopsis of the last game.

Friends, colleagues, and acquaintances are invited to attend Reed's retirement celebration parade from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, in Lot 56B at the corner of S Razorback Rd and Leroy Pond Dr on the University of Arkansas campus. Parade attendees should practice all COVID-19 precautions: 1) Wear a face covering; 2) Wash hands frequently; 3) Maintain at least 6-feet of distancing. Please do not attend if you feel unwell, have a fever, and/or cough.

We have hopes of hosting a proper celebration party for Reed later this Fall.
