Event Description:
Student Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Informational Meeting

Thursday, September 12, 5pm in Old Main Giffels Auditorium

The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards will host an informational meeting on the Student Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) application process on Thursday, September 12 at 5pm in Old Main Giffels Auditorium. Research mentors are encouraged to attend as well. In addition to SURF funding, eligible students can be considered (depending on honors status) for Honors College grants, and students who are not in honors may be considered for Undergraduate Research Grants.

Administered by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE), the SURF program offers funding for undergraduate students performing research in the state. The application is an interactive PDF. The awards range from $2,125 to $2,750 with the university providing matching funds for each student. Funding includes a student stipend, as well as up to $750 in travel costs (for research-related travel), and $750 for the research mentor. In order to apply, students must have a research mentor, be enrolled full-time at the time of application and for the duration of the grant, have at least 30 hours completed on campus, and have at least a 3.25 GPA. Last year, 44 University of Arkansas students received a SURF grant, and more than 1,000 U of A students have received SURF grants since the program was established. Eligible students of all majors who are conducting undergraduate research should definitely apply.

We will review the rules and the submission process as well as provide application tips. If you have questions about SURF, please contact Jonathan Langley in the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards at 479-575-2716 or email
