Event Description:

More than 4.6 million children live in a home with an unsecured weapon and at least 300 unintentional shootings by children happen each year. The Be SMART campaign is a grass roots movement started by the group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. The main goal of the campaign is to reduce unintentional shootings, suicides, and homicides that occur when an unsupervised child gets their hands on a Gun. The Be SMART campaign is working to increase knowledge about proper gun storage and other simple things that can be done to save lives in our communities among individuals, schools, health workers and now, mental health workers.

Learning how to talk with clients about safe gun storage and gun violence prevention will help reduce unintentional child shootings, gun suicide and homicide.

Social workers are often on the front lines of gun violence working with victims and their families. We often work through trauma and grief with survivors or the families of survivors. The purpose of the Be SMART campaign is to give social workers and mental health professionals the education, confidence and skills necessary to talk with clients, families, and agencies about gun violence prevention. This workshop will offer mental health professionals the skills needed to work to prevent these tragedies, rather than only offer intervention after a gun accident has taken place.

The workshop will consists of a short presentation from a social worker on the Be SMART campaign, followed by a short informational session from a social worker on ways in which we can assess for unsecured weapons in homes and walk our clients through proper gun storage and the different types of gun storage offered on the market today.
