Nonlinear Optical and Photocurrent Responses of 2D Quantum Materials

The rapid advances in electronic structure theory and high-performance computing in the last few decades have led to deeper understandings and more accurate predictions of materials physical and chemical properties. Here I will present our recent theoretical effort on understanding and predicting nonlinear light-matter interaction in 2D materials and topological materials. First, I will present a theoretical study of second harmonic generation (SHG) in semiconducting 2D materials. The microscopic analyses show that the large SHG responses in monolayer group IV monochalcogenides are dominated by the large residual of two opposite intraband contributions. In addition, the SHG polarization anisotropy is strongly correlated with the intrinsic ferroelastic and ferroelectric orders, which leads to nonlinear ferroic optical Hall effect – a Hall-like direct nonlinear shift and circular photocurrent from the second order current response whose direction can be controlled by both internal ferroic orders and external light polarization. Finally, I will present our recent first-principles study of nonlinear Hall effect in layered topological materials and demonstrate how the complex interplay of electronic structure, symmetry and Berry curvature dipole controls their nonlinear response. Our theoretical findings demonstrate that first-principles electronic structure theory combined with high-performance computing provides microscopic insights of nonlinear optical/photocurrent responses in 2D quantum materials and opens new avenues for the design and discovery of nonlinear optical materials.
