Event Description:
There is much talk about the Elaine Massacre of 1919 and there will be much more before the last weekend of September this year. Patricia Taylor Kienzle has been con- ducting volunteer activities in Elaine since 1998 but didn’t know any of the history for about 7 years. A grant from the Black History Commission allowed her to write a book, suited for 4th grade students and older, about a hero from that history, Scipio Jones. A Black Hall of Fame grant allowed Ms. Kienzle to produce a poster for high school and adults. This class will include some of the history with a different focus than one may have seen before. It will also give some insight into the community that those going to Elaine for interviews, filming, etc. may not get. There will be information about the Lee Street Community Center and how Fayetteville residents contribute to its activities. There just might be a bingo style game with prizes to help review the information!
