Event Description:
The Swing Era, the most popular period for jazz in America, ended around the finish of World War II. In its place came a new hard-driving, improvisational style called Be-Bop. A complex music, Be-Bop was short on singable melodies, hard to follow, and nearly impossible to dance to. As a result, and in conjunction with the rise of rock and roll, jazz began to fall from favor and was at risk of being classified as something quaint from the past. Starting with the iconic Miles Davis LP entitled Birth of the Cool, and other re- leases by Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, and the Modern Jazz Quartet, a new excitement was generated in the 1960s on college campuses across America. Jazz was back in a big way and many credit the Cool style with saving the art form of jazz from extinction. The class will focus on the unique players who made this phenomenon happen as well as listening to examples of their music.
