Event Description:
Join us for refreshments

From Gravitational-wave Detections to Gravitational-wave Astronomy: The first detection of gravitational waves that was announced in February 2016 was the payoff of decades of effort by many people who labored to make this detection a reality. Since that first event, many more sources have been measured. We are now using gravitational waves as a tool for studying strong gravity objects in the universe. Gravitational-wave astronomy has begun. In this talk, I will describe how it is possible for instruments like LIGO to detect extremely weak gravitational-wave signals, how we use general relativity to understand these signals and their sources, and where this field is going over the next 15 years.
