Event Description:
On Saturday, September 7th, the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards will host a workshop for students interested in applying for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. The workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. in Silas Hunt Hall, room 223. Breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Seniors, juniors planning for the future, and first-year graduate students studying in STEM or related fields are encouraged to attend. The workshop will focus on the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, as well as other post-graduate opportunities for STEM students, including the National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, and the Hertz Fellowship, among others.

Discussion will briefly cover guidelines and benefits of each program, as well as the programs’ application processes and deadlines, but the main focus of the workshop will be writing and application strategies. Professors Susan Burkett, Magda El-Shenawee, and Suzanne McCray will provide tips for applying to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program and lead a Q&A session. A panel of current graduate students receiving NSF Graduate Research Fellowship funding will also be on hand to discuss their application processes. The session will conclude with a writing workshop in which applicants will have the opportunity to discuss the written portions of their applications with faculty and Office of Nationally Competitive Awards staff. Participants are encouraged to bring essays for review.

Students interested in attending the Saturday, September 7th workshop should RSVP to Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and we want to make sure we have enough for all.
