Bray is a clinical lecturer in law, senior research scholar in law, and legal director of the Law, Environment & Animals Program (LEAP) at Yale Law School. An award-winning advocate, Bray brings extensive experience in animal law, international policy, nonprofit leadership and litigation, along with a sustained, pragmatic commitment to improving human–animal interactions. Title: Telling the Warp from the Weft: Fibering and Surgery in Dimension 4

Abstract: Torus surgery is a fundamental operation in 4-manifold topology, generalizing 3-dimensional Dehn surgery to dimension 4 and underpinning constructions such as Fintushel-Stern knot surgery. A natural question is how this operation interacts with fibered structures. In particular, we partially answer the question "When does drilling-and-filling a 4-manifold along an embedded 2-torus preserve the existence of a fibration?" In this talk, we develop a framework for extending circle fibrations of a 3-torus boundary across 4-manifolds of the form S^1 \times E_Y(K), where K is a fibered knot in a closed, oriented 3-manifold Y, as well as across oriented \Sigma_{g,1}-bundles over T^2. The key mechanism is the rigidity of essential tori in T^3, which forces boundary fibrations to extend uniquely under natural geometric conditions. As applications, we show that broad families of 4-manifolds obtained by torus surgery admit fibrations over the circle. We also discuss consequences for torus surgeries in S^1 \times S^3 and structural constraints on 4-manifolds containing "torus fibered torus knots" (a generalization of a fibered knot in a 3-manifold).

About the talk: Shape and Momentum: How We Communicate, Work, and Plan for an Uncertain Future

Join internationally recognized choreographer Liz Lerman as she shares tools for living in extraordinary times of change. Drawing on themes from her forthcoming book, Shape and Momentum: An Insomniac’s Guide for a World in Constant Motion (to be published in June 2026), Liz will explore ideas ranging from Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle to the Big Bang as frameworks for thinking about creativity, change, and the role of artists today.

Liz founded and led the intergenerational Dance Exchange company for more than three decades, with an equal commitment to concert and community work. She is the inventor of the Critical Response Process® feedback system and has spent the past decade in higher education as an Institute Professor at Arizona State University.

Through storytelling and dialogue, Liz will guide participants through four central questions from her book:
1. What knowledge do we gain from our lived experiences?
2. Can Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle serve as a theory of change and a definition of creativity?
3. What happens when we pair rejection with reflection?
4. How do we distill our practices into experiential learning tools others can use?

This lecture is free and open to the public. Parking is available in Stadium, Garland, and Harmon parking garages.

This session will feature Susan Chin, Vini Nathan, Kay Sargent and Julia Gamolina. The event will follow a roundtable format, with brief introductory presentations from each participant followed by a moderated discussion and audience questions. This conversation is intended to be accessible and interactive, offering insight into leadership paths, professional responsibility and the evolving role of design in shaping the built environment.

Susan Chin, FAIA, Hon. ASLA, is an urbanist and civic leader who leads DesignConnects, an independent consultancy advancing design excellence in the public realm. She recently served as Co-Commissioner of the U.S. Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, in partnership with the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

Vini Nathan, Ph.D., has served as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Auburn University since 2023, after a year in the interim role. As Auburn’s chief academic officer, she oversees the university’s instructional, outreach and academic operations, working with the deans of 12 colleges and leading strategic planning, accreditation, faculty affairs and budget oversight for an R-1 flagship institution of 33,000 students.

Kay Sargent, FASID, FIIDA, is a licensed and certified interior designer with 40 years of experience. She serves as Director of Thought Leadership, Interiors at HOK, where she leads teams addressing workplace strategy, change management, strategic planning and designing for inclusion.

Julia Gamolina is an Associate Principal at Ennead Architects and Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Madame Architect, an award-winning media and events platform highlighting women and creative leaders shaping the built environment. Since launching the publication in 2018, she has grown it into a global platform reaching readers in more than 100 countries.

Title: Rationality questions for genus 2 curves with real multiplication

Abstract: Genus 2 curves can be broadly classified by the endomorphisms of their Jacobians. For a generic curve, the endomorphism ring is Z. If the endomorphism ring contains a real quadratic order, we say the curve has real multiplication. I will discuss the problems of classification and construction of such curves over C (classical) and over Q (new). I will contrast this with the case of elliptic (genus 1) curves, and discuss the connection with modular forms. This is joint work with Alex Cowan and Sam Frengley.

U of A Meat Scientists and local pitmasters will provide professional BBQ tips and live demonstrations, then the Boss Hawg ribeye turn‑in and auction will take place, where five BBQ teams will compete for a $1,000 prize and trophy, presenting plates of ribeye steak, a side, and a dessert to celebrity judges, and a duplicate plate will also be auctioned. The Boss Hawg Award will be announced at 8:30 p.m. The event closes at 9:30 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Department of Animal Science’s scholarship fund and student competition teams.

This course, Unmanned Aircraft Systems 1, is the first step to becoming a professional UAS (drone) pilot. It is designed to help people prepare to pass their FAA Remote Pilot Certificate Examination (FAA Part 107 Exam). Additionally, those students sponsored by their organization can complete a project based on their sponsor’s needs. This can include thermal roof inspections, modeling or other projects.

Learn unmanned aircraft best practices and the basics of data processing software. Gain practical proficiency with hands-on flying, and learn about flight weather data interpretation, flight planning, airspace, map reading, and use of platforms to perform video and mapping tasks.

The course is intended for people who want to become more proficient pilots, flying safely and legally. This includes people interested in using the technology for work or commercial ventures, as well as hobbyists and people who may be interested in becoming aircraft pilots.

Abstract: Many problems in physics, materials science, biology, and machine learning can be formulated as variational models, where multiscale coupling and competition are encoded through an energy–dissipation law. Preserving structures of variational models at the discrete level is crucial for accuracy and robustness, especially in long-time simulations. In this talk, I will present an energetic-variational, structure-preserving discretization framework for variational models. The key idea is to design algorithms based on the energy–dissipation law, rather than on strong- or weak-form PDE discretizations. Within this framework, we develop a memory-efficient, mesh-free neural-network discretization for gradient flows using a temporal-then-spatial discretization approach. As a representative example, we discuss a neural-network-based Lagrangian method for generalized diffusions (Wasserstein-type gradient flows), which yields an efficient Lagrangian implementation of the celebrated Jordan–Kinderlehrer–Otto (JKO) scheme.

A short bio: Prof. Yiwei Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Riverside. Prior to joining UCR, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he worked with Prof. Chun Liu. He received his Ph.D. from Peking University and earned his B.S. from Zhejiang University. His research lies at the intersection of variational modeling, scientific computing, and machine learning, with applications spanning physics, materials science, biology, and data science. He focuses on the development of multiscale, thermodynamically consistent variational models and structure-preserving numerical methods for complex dissipative systems, including liquid crystals, polymeric fluids, reaction-diffusion processes, and biological systems. More recently, his work explores the integration of machine learning with variational modeling and computation, including learning unknown dynamics, constructing coarse-grained closures, improving numerical methods, solving high-dimensional PDEs, and investigating variational perspectives on machine learning through energy-dissipation principles and structure-preserving algorithm design.

This free sewing workshop series will be taught by MA Art Education student Edward Osei (eo024@uark.edu) in the Makerspace on level 2 in Mullins Library. Participants will learn essential sewing skills, including how to cut and sew basic shirts and pants, while also exploring sustainable practices and developing greater self-awareness through making.

Participants are encouraged to bring clothing or fabric to mend.

Space is limited, and registration is required. Enrollment will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The workshop will take place on:

Abstract: The ability to maintain homeostasis is a defining feature of life. Energy homeostasis balances energy intake, storage, expenditure, and release. The majority of these homeostatic processes are understood at the cellular level. However, much less is known about multicellular organisms that have complex physiology (including distinct organs with specialized functions) and that perform energetically relevant behaviors such as food choice and physical exertion. How does an organism constantly challenged by developmental changes, as well as a shifting environment, integrate all these variables to maintain energetic balance? The Reis lab investigates the molecular mechanisms that regulate energy homeostasis across cellular to organ-system levels using advanced genetic, biochemical, and molecular tools in Drosophila melanogaster. To deepen our understanding of how organisms maintain energy balance, Dr. Reis examines how these pathways interface with external signals to maintain homeostasis, and aims to understand the molecular basis of differences in homeostatic mechanisms between the sexes, as well as throughout development, in both health and disease.

Biography: Tânia Reis earned her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Porto in Portugal and earned her PhD as part of the groundbreaking Gulbenkian PhD Program in Biology and Medicine. Tânia did her PhD research under the mentorship of Bruce Edgar at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. During postdoctoral work with Iswar Hariharan at UC Berkeley, Tânia developed a paradigm to study mechanisms of energy homeostasis. In 2011, Tânia began her research program at the Anschutz Medical Campus of the University of Colorado to discover ways that organs communicate with each other to maintain organismal energy balance. In 2023, she was awarded the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award for her high-risk, high-reward project investigating how the brain coordinates its neuronal activity with its high energetic demands in the context of memory and learning. Abstract: Phenotypic variation in most organisms, including humans, is highly complex and is caused by thousands of genetic variants of small individual effect, and little is known about the role of gene-by-gene (GxG) or gene-by-environment (GxE) interactions influencing this variation. In this talk, Dr. Rand will discuss recent work on the genetics of mitochondria as a novel model in the context of this complex trait problem. The mitonuclear genome requires coordinated expression of 37 genes in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and more than 1,000 genes in the nuclear genome, making it a model subset of genomic interactions in all animals. Dr. Rand will summarize previous and unpublished work using Drosophila to dissect the joint contribution of mtDNA- and nuclear-encoded genes to metabolically demanding traits and gene expression and proposes that mitonuclear interactions are key components of the mechanisms underlying GxG and GxE interactions.

Biography: David Rand joined the Brown faculty in 1991 after receiving a B.A. at Harvard and a PhD at Yale in Biology, and postdoctoral training in population genetics at Harvard. He is the Stephen T. Olney Professor of Natural History in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, where he is Chair of the Department. He teaches undergraduate courses in evolutionary biology, evolutionary genetics, and graduate seminars on ecological, evolutionary, and population genetics. His research focuses on the coevolution of nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, the role of mitochondrial mutations in fitness, aging and disease, and the environmental genomics of adaptation in marine organisms, with funding from the NIH and NSF. He was the principal investigator of an NSF IGERT Training Grant in Reverse Ecology, bridging graduate programs in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, the Center for Computational Molecular Biology, Applied Math, and the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole. He is currently the principal investigator of an NIH COBRE award focusing on the Computational Biology of Human Disease. He is a past president of the American Genetic Association and an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

This course involves long hours, often 9-10 hours per day, roughly 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. or later each day. Most days are spent listening to lectures and identifying mites through the microscope. Participants must be able to spend long hours looking through the microscope in order to get the most out of the workshop. All necessary materials will be supplied by the program.

Soil Acarology

The Acarology Summer Program is offering a three-week intensive course on soil mites May 25-June 12, 2026 at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. This three-week course concentrates on the Acari associated with soil and litter habitats. Week one will be devoted to Mesostigmata, the second week to Endeostigmata & Oribatida, and the third week to Prostigmata. The main emphasis will be on the identification and systematics of both adults and immatures, but this course will have a strong secondary emphasis on ecology and life-history. Additionally, topics like collecting and curation techniques for each major group of mites will be covered.

This course involves long hours, often 9-10 hours per day, roughly 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. or later each day. Most days are spent listening to lectures and identifying mites through the microscope. Participants must be able to spend long hours looking through the microscope in order to get the most out of the workshop. All necessary materials will be supplied by the program.

Prior Learning

This non-credit course is beginner friendly, with no prior experience with mites required. The course is designed to build interest in Acarology and help participants prepare for future work with mites. To ensure success, students should:

· Be prepared to spend many hours seated at a microscope examining mites. No prior experience working with microscopes is required.

· Be comfortable reading and understanding English, as all materials are provided in English.
