DESCRIPTION:The Arkansas Integrative Metabolic Research Center (AIMRC) will
host Dr. Megan Rosa-Caldwell\, an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science
at the University of Arkansas at 12:55 p.m. on Wednesday\, February 19th\
, in ARKV 0002. Dr. Rosa-Caldwell’s research focuses on investigating th
e short and long-term effects of musculoskeletal alterations during anorex
ia nervosa (AN). This includes how skeletal muscle is directly affected by
AN or how skeletal muscle health may influence other systems such as the
 brain\, bones\, and more. \n\n \n\nAbstract: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a hi
ghly prevalent and difficult-to-treat psychiatric disease. Concurrently wi
th bodyweight loss\, there is a substantial loss of skeletal muscle mass a
nd strength. Given muscle mass’s key role in metabolic and overall healt
h\, these muscle alterations may be a key determinant of short and long-te
rm health outcomes in this population. In this talk\, Dr. Rosa-Caldwell wi
ll discuss the current clinical literature on muscle health in those with
AN or a prior history of AN. She will also discuss preliminary findings on
changes to muscle physiology and biology during AN and following weight r
estoration\, as well as highlight future areas for investigation.\n \n\nBi
ography: Dr. Rosa-Caldwell is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science i
n the Department of Human Health\, Performance\, and Recreation at the Uni
versity of Arkansas. Her research investigates musculoskeletal alterations
during anorexia nervosa. Dr. Rosa-Caldwell's team has developed a rodent
model of anorexia nervosa that simulates the prolonged duration of anorexi
a nervosa and using this model\, the team investigates how anorexia-induce
d muscle loss influences acute and long-term health. Dr. Rosa-Caldwell cur
rently has over 45 publications in the field of muscle biology and is an a
ctive member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American P
 hysiological Society.\n\n \n\nARKV is located at\n\n310 Arkansas Ave. \nFa
yetteville\, AR 72701\n\n \n\nThis event is supported by NIGMS of the Nati
onal Institutes of Health under Award Number P20GM139768. The content is s
olely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent
the official views of the National Institutes of Health.\n \n\nPizza and
beverages will be served. Please contact Kimberley Fuller\, fullerk@uark.e
du\, for more information.\n \n\nFor those unable to attend in person\, th
is seminar will also be available via Zoom.
