About this Event
Description: The Pea Ridge Battlefield reservation has shielded the mature oakhickory forest on the north slope of Elkhorn Mountain from disturbance for many decades. What is thought to be the natural frequency of fire has been maintained by controlled burns in this area and serves as an example of how such management influences the appearance of the forest. Dr. Fred Paillet will investigate how well this treatment has acted to suppress the infiltration of mesic tree species while looking for any remaining traces of the famous 1863 battle. After hiking about a mile into this forest the group will arrive at a small sandstone alcove with a seasonally flowing waterfall and an interesting clonal stand of unusually large pawpaw trees. Forest Detective classes will be based on material from the Ozark Forest Forensics book available online at the Ozark Society web page. If anyone would like to order this book, please contact Dr. Fred Paillet as he is offering a special author’s reduced price of $15. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Bring a bag lunch and bottle of water. Activity Level 3
