About this Event
614 W. Lafayette St., Fayetteville, AR 72701
https://olli.uark.edu/OLLI participants will learn fascinating and humorous details about the life and legacy of Henry Doughty Tovey. Professor Tovey founded and was chair of the University of Arkansas Music Department from 1908 until his untimely death in 1933. An accomplished classical pianist, he is known for composing the music for the University’s Alma Mater and Fight Song and as a beloved and inspiring mentor to over 3000 students, (often housing 2-3 students in his home, if necessary). He was a passionate advocate for bringing fine arts education to rural Arkansans. Meet Susan Tonymon, new owner of the Tovey House at the Hill, to tour this newly restored 1910’s home. Joining her will be Karen Sebourn (a renowned history buff ) and Sierra Tonymon (hospitality coordinator for the Tovey House) and learn more about the significant and lasting cultural and civic contributions this 1900’s Renaissance man made for Fayetteville and Arkansas. Afterwards, join the group for a walk around the historic West Lafayette neighborhood to see homes of other prominent figures instrumental in the founding and development of the University of Arkansas. (The group will leisurely walk from Lafayette St to Old Main and back– about 2 blocks. Wear comfortable shoes.)
