DESCRIPTION:War’s disastrous effects are multiple and far reaching. Tho
usands killed and wounded\, millions displaced\, cities destroyed\, and bi
llions spent in arms and military equipment’s. But war’s destructive
path reaches far into many other aspects of life. Literature and the arts
provide valuable insights into the human cost of war\, the suffering and t
rauma experienced\, as well as expressions of resilience\, hope and solida
rity. Science too provides insights into the long-lasting impact of war on
the environment. Armed conflicts poison the land\, water and air of the
regions affected with chemicals and many other pollutants turning rich and
fertile fields into vast wastelands. \n\n \n\nAs part of the national ce
lebration of International Education Week\, the U of A Scholars At Risk Co
mmittee and the Writers at Risk Program invite the community to a panel di
scussion providing interdisciplinary perspectives on war\, on Wed. Novembe
r 15\, at 4:00pm at the Poultry Science Auditorium (211). The event is fr
ee and open to the public.\n\n \n\nThe panel consists of Nigerian writer U
chenna Awoke\, Arkansas International first Writers at Risk Residential fe
llow and Yemenis entomologist Prof. Salman Abdo Al-Shami\, Scholars at Ris
k Program. The panel will be moderated by Creative Writing Professor Padma
Viswanathan. The event is Sponsored by the Professor Bennett Scholars at
